( The Father Of Angling ).
A 17th Century Charles II oak slope front desk box , dated 1672 on the slope front ,just above the date is a carved name which reads Izaak Walton .Izaak Walton English 17th century biographer and author of the book "The Compleat Angler .Or the Contemplative Man's
Recreation , mention his name to fishermen and usually the reply is he's the father/ God father of angling,,it's really where it all begins in English Angling literature. Izaak revised 5 editions of the book throughout his life the last being in 1676 .The book wasn't just about angling though in a guise it was about the social history of the turbulent times that was seen through his eyes,Izaak being a Royalist and also a devout Anglican his King, Charles 1st recently beheaded England was now under the reign of Oliver Cromwell. Walton was married twice first to Racheal Floud who died in 1640, his second marriage was to Ann Ken who's half - brother Thomas later became Bishop Thomas Ken of Bath & Wells . Thomas Ken & Izaak Walton a sketch of their lives published in 1908 both now related through the marriage of Ann Ken to Izaak references in the book an oak
box fitting the description above as well as other related furniture being listed in the will of Izaak Walton, it was then purchased as a fine collection of old oak and antique furniture offered at auction in 1881 and was then in the possession of one Mr Elkin Mathews .In the1970s it's offered
at Bonhams auction. In recent times Izaak Waltons desk box is offered at Dreweatts Auction which was the first time I saw it but unfortunately missed the sale . In 2023 it reappears in Sailsbury. It's a big slope front desk box with inlaid fish in various woods probably to big size wise for what we look for today... but the name on the box doesn't come any bigger in English17th Century Literature and for
us in the Angling fraternity.
