Miniature Bronze cast Iron Maiden , depicting a womans face & two handles to front hinged
body which opens centrally to reveal sets of internal iron spikes. The actual history of the Iron maiden is a bit of a grey area in whether it actually ever exsited in medieval times, stories of these devices started to circulate around the 1700s although there was never any sufficient evidence of one actually existing. The actual
construction of the Iron Maiden could be linked to a similar device known as the Schandmantel which translates to "coat of Shame" these were put on people who had done something wrong
and were paraded around there town or village while being mocked, these devices never had spikes which does make a big difference.
