This intriguing portrait still holds some unanswered questions as the gentleman still remains anonymous at present. The painting depicts a middle aged man modestly dressed, above left
the inscription ANNO1616 below AETAS 58 ( aged 58) He wears what looks like a leather doublet
his left hand clutching a pair of leather gloves , his right hand holding a prayer book. To the right
of him are revealing objects which are,a level hammer, chisel & trowel ,possibly a symbolic meaning to who he is? and what he was? What we believe is, he was a Master Stone Mason / Architect of his day, and those objects are a reference to the tools of his trade, his sizable hands portray someone you might imagine working a hammer & chisel on stone ... a grafter... Its very doubtful that he was of an aristocratic bloodline, which makes this portrait even more Interesting.
The portrait is painted on a oak panel housed within a later frame.
